First Weeks
During their initial weeks, new students often experience a mix of freedom, curiosity, and uncertainty. Unlike traditional schools with set classes and grades, FWSS students take full responsibility for how they spend their time.
At first, the absence of a fixed schedule can feel overwhelming. There are no mandatory classes, assignments, or tests. Gradually, most new students begin to explore their interests more deeply, whether that means diving into art, organizing a game, starting a business, or simply observing and building friendships. Over time, what initially feels like unstructured freedom often becomes a powerful sense of ownership, confidence, and belonging within a self-governing community.
Mentors are available to answer questions, explain how the School Meeting and judicial system work, and offer steady reassurance during moments of uncertainty. Rather than directing a new student’s schedule, they listen, check in, and help the student think through challenges, modeling respect and trust.
Longer-term students often help in equally meaningful ways. They may invite new students into games, show them around the campus, explain community norms, or simply sit with them during the first few meetings so they don’t feel alone. Because FWSS mixes ages freely, younger and older students regularly form natural mentoring relationships. Over time, these small acts of inclusion, which may range from answering questions to extending invitations and sharing inside knowledge can help new students relax into the freedom of FWSS as they begin to see themselves as full, valued members of the community.
